Do we really learn about life truths as we grow up? Do we ever grow up? There are lots of things that get in the way. We are conditioned by family, education, religion and social media. They are all telling us what we should do, how we should look and what we should even think.

To understand what Jesus means, we have to look at the rest of the conversation in this passage. Jesus continues: “The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed”.

So far, we’ve been talking a lot about the truth, but now we find Jesus talking about a son. He says slaves don’t remain in the house forever; in Jesus’s culture, slaves were more like indentured servants. When their debt was paid they were free to go, or, under Jewish law, they were released every seven years.
